Digital Marketing In Victoria - Jessy Savage Marketing

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessy Savage, Founder & Digital Marketing Strategist of Jessy Savage Marketing, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business focuses on digital marketing, and all aspects included - I design websites, I work with on-page and technical SEO, local SEO, paid advertising, email marketing, social media content and strategy, graphic design - everything imaginable. My customers are typically a mix of tourism and hospitality or service-based businesses looking to shine locally, and I have a few North American e-commerce businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I was pulled out of my music class when I was 11 to learn HTML/CSS coding and spent that year learning how to build websites from scratch. I was always an avid learner, and my dad really nurtured that - he had a business running a graphic design shop at the time, so while I was in school learning coding, my after-school lessons were Photoshop at his print shop. We did everything from business cards to billboards, and from the ages of 10 - 16, I worked in print advertising. In my early 20s, I started an online clothing company and built a website, integrated e-commerce payments, taught myself Google Ads, social media management/paid ad management, and started infusing myself into the world of SEO, doing freelance for a few local businesses. Eventually, I brought my skills to an incredibly skilled inbound marketing agency who were integral in my learning how to run a business. They fine-tuned my skills, and I continued to learn more and more under their guidance, and then Covid hit. While being laid off, I continued to contract - and they encouraged me to find other clients and mentored me during the first year of business ownership.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been gaining confidence and taking pride in what I do. I build relationships with my clients based on their needs, and we are true friends who are helping each other's businesses grow. I have always been a shy person by nature, and my clients and running my business have gotten me out of my comfort zone and made me grow as a person - and I get these incredible and meaningful friendships!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I have a difficult time disconnecting - I really am a workaholic. If I check my email at 11 pm and see something, I have to respond to it straight away, or I can't sleep. My favorite part of what I do is building a strategy and seeing results, and I don't know when to 'turn it off.'

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a business around both your skill and your passion. There are times when it's difficult to be 'creative on demand' and make sure that you have an outlet for your passion and creativity.
  2. Keep a good internal strategy - what I learned from some of the best marketing agencies is that oftentimes they have the worst internal strategy, and I fall prey to that.
  3. Don't be afraid to ask for help - a good business has people with all skill sets coming to the table to help the business grow together.
