Healthy Lifestyle through Food & Travel - Jessie Carpenter

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessie Carpenter, Registered Dietitian of Nutrition Prescription LLC., located in Warner Robins, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My private practice nutrition business is Nutrition Prescription LLC, and my business blog is The Traveling RD. The private practice focuses on adults who are ready for positive, long-lasting lifestyle and behavior changes in regard to general health and well-being, weight loss, and energy management. I also speak to individuals looking for recipes and ways to meal plan. The blog focuses on food and travel - "exploring the world of great food" - as I write about destinations and dishes, highlight businesses, and particularly spotlight foods. Anyone who loves food and/or travel will benefit from this blog.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a Registered Dietitian for nine years and have been privileged to work in a wide variety of settings, including military bases, level II trauma centers, and both diabetic and cardiac outpatient services. I love to share my expertise and experience in order to help others discover practical ways to eat well, feel healthy, prevent disease, reach goals, and love life. I thought a natural next step to do so was starting my virtual nutrition business. Being able to stay home to love and support my new baby is a huge motivation to continue to do what I'm doing and keep working hard in my profession.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since I'm a new business owner, I would say two of my biggest accomplishments so far are getting it up and running and setting up my own website and blog! Sometimes there, are doubt if it will go as far as I dream, and definitely, days I am too tired to think about work, but I keep at it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, there are two hard things: the website and some of the administration. I'm not a computer whiz, so everything on my website I painstakingly learned on my own, and it is still not quite where I want it to be, haha! The admin stuff is also new to me, so I'm learning how to get all the paperwork in order, too.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Put your dreams out there. It may not go viral or grow as quickly as you want, but your business will be a part of you, and you will grow personally and professionally.
  2. Share your knowledge. I wouldn't be where I am without tidbits, free resources, and asking questions in groups. People can help you get going on your dreams and stay going.
  3. Organize your thoughts, plans, and tactics. I, for one, had a lot of different ideas and ways to make it all happen. Putting them on paper (and a long to-do list to boot!) really helped me map out what was important, what to put to the side for later, and what to delete altogether.
