Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Waugh, Founder of Jessica Waugh Photography, located in Burlington, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a commercial and lifestyle photographer based out of Burlington, ON. I work with small to medium size businesses for their image needs to use in their marketing and advertising as well as social media and brand awareness building. My clients are typically solopreneurs from various industries.
Tell us about yourself
I've always dreamed of being self-employed. Working on a business that I love and that I can pour into. My passion for photography actually sparked while I was in high school. Working with film and processing it in a dark room was something that I thoroughly enjoyed. Fast forward a bunch of years, and I decided to take the big step of going into business for myself. My passion for creating a beautiful image stays true today. I strive to deliver high-quality images for my clients to cherish for years to come.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to connect with established brands and have them trust me to execute their vision. Today's heavy image and content landscape have businesses and brands working hard to ensure their leadership in their industries remains top-tier. It's vital to have beautiful, professional visuals represented in the marketplace. I feel honored to be able to support local small businesses achieve this.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is trying to balance working ON your business as well as working IN your business. There are a lot of responsibilities that come with being an entrepreneur!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Think like an owner and not like an employee. There's no real 'clocking out,' and it's vital to think about longevity. Will this decision benefit my business long term?
- Time block! This is so so important! There are regular responsibilities that need tending to, so make sure you block your calendar to take care of them (this 100% includes time for yourself).
- Be super clear about who your client/customer is. It'll take the guesswork out of a lot of your marketing decisions.
