Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Cameron, Founder of Jessica Cameron Design, located in Ravenna, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi, I'm Jess! I am a book designer who formats book interiors and ebooks and prepares them for publishing, as well as occasionally designing book covers, logos, social media content, or other design needs. My clients are authors or publishing houses that want creative input and control over their book's designs through custom and thoughtful work.

Tell us about yourself

As a kid, I was always the one that would stay up late reading with a flashlight under the covers. That passion followed me into college when I started studying Graphic Design. I began interning with a couple of different magazines and working on the school paper. In my last semester at university, I spent 5 months designing a series of book covers, and soon after began freelancing.

Since then, I have worked with a design agency doing marketing and branding work, an academic publisher designing mathematic textbooks, my group of long-term book clients, and my husband's business Blue Wolf Martial Arts.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being part of making my client's dreams come true! During 2020 with so many people having more time at home, many of us started devoting more time to our passions or picking up hobbies again that we hadn't spent time with in years. As a result, a lot of people have published their first book(s) since that year, and it has been an honor to work with so many first-time authors that are passionate and energetic about their work. My favorite part is when my clients receive their first proof copies - the excitement is contagious, and I love sharing that moment of joy with them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing all of the hats. When you're part of a team, you can concentrate on your specialty, but when it's just you, things still need to be done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be truthful with yourself. Do you have enough perseverance and discipline to work without someone else managing your time?
  2. Build a schedule that works with your life and energy levels.
  3. Devote part of your day to your own health. Go to the gym, meal prep for the week, read a book, and plan ahead as much as possible.
