Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Conti, Co-Founder of Jess and Lee Maternity, located in Strathmore, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a pre and postnatal education and support company based out of Strathmore, Alberta. We provide services virtually, in-home, and in class to expecting and new parents.
Tell us about yourself
I am Jess. I am a registered nurse with additional training in lactation, infant feeding, childbirth education, and basic life support. My business partner, Lee, is a birth doula and registered massage therapist. We connected over our shared passion for improving pre and postnatal education and support rurally within our community. Since that, we have expanded to the virtual platform as we have had clients from all over reach out for our support. We have a unique perspective because our professional backgrounds are so different. Our experiences complement each other in so many ways. We are incredibly motivated to empower, support, and educate new parents. I am a parent of young children and recognize the need for support in this area. Lee has been to many births and witnessed areas that needed more focus to improve birth parents' experiences pre and postnatally.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Forming this partnership has definitely come with some challenges and learning curves. We both independently owned businesses prior to this. Our biggest accomplishment so far has been seeing several families pre and postnatally that provided us with a 5-star google review since we formed in only September 2022.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Dividing and conquering our tasks unrelated to the pre and postnatal support services has been a learning curve. It has taken us some time to identify our strong suits on the business management side of things.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Communicate your goals regularly. Be comfortable with adapting your goals and services while keeping your mission at heart. Stay focused and patient; it takes time to establish and maintain credibility.
