Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Loomis, Founder of Jennifer Loomis Photography LLC., located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder of the maternity or pregnancy photography genre and have been photographing pregnant women for 30 years. I started because I wanted to challenge society's definition of beauty by showing the beauty of the pregnant body.

My clients tend to be visually sophisticated women and their partners who are looking for something unique and more artistic to commemorate this special time in their lives. I work with women from all over the world who fly into my studios to not only come away with a beautiful photograph but also leave feeling beautiful in their bodies.

Tell us about yourself

I got started photographing nude women, and it led to nude pregnant women when I received a referral from Annie Liebovitz's studio in New York. I love my work. I love the beauty of the pregnant body, and each body is different. I see pregnancy as one of the biggest transitions a woman undergoes, and I love that I can try to tell her story in one or two photographs. My goal is always to make unique images of each woman to capture their unique story and experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment is pioneering the genre of maternity photography. It is so fun to see how it has taken off in so many different directions. After that, a big accomplishment was having my book published by a publisher.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is having a professional and consistent support team. Finding the right people who understand what it takes to offer high-quality service to my clients was a challenging endeavor. I am happy to say I have a great team and hope they stay for a long time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My grandfather imparted this wisdom that I keep posted on a note above my desk, "Know your business, do good work and be honest." I love that. I would also add a business owner should value client relationships above all else. I am in this business because of the wonderful people who I have met and who believed in me, even when I first started, and maternity photography was just weird. Relationships are so important. They are hard to measure, but I believe they are a business's most important asset.
