Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenna Gaidusek, an online interior designer and a home decor blogger, based in Summerville, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an interior designer that specializes in working with clients remotely. I communicate exceptionally well when I can visually communicate my design ideas through renderings and other forms of digital representations to "show" vs. tell my clients how their new home will look and feel. I also teach designers how to build a thriving business virtually.

As an introvert, I was looking for a job that allowed me to work from home and utilize my interior design degree. In 2015 when I left my corporate job in NYC, I decided that virtual design was the best avenue for all my skills and personality type. It has also allowed me to stay home and raise my family and inspired my husband to leave his career as an executive chef and be an entrepreneur, work from home, and be more present with our family. Our family and the ability to grow our business, do what we love, and be successful get us out of bed every morning and inspire us to do what we do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I grew a Facebook group I created in 2018 for online interior designers as a place to help designers that wanted to also work remotely into an entire online business school of continued education, rendering software and other advanced design tools into a program that was acquired in 2022 but Mydoma Studio. I now work as their Director of Education and Community doing what I love most- teaching designers every day and running my interior design business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing my home life and putting the work down with two young kids. It's hard to put it down sometimes when I have an idea I want to explore because I love what I do so much, and I truly love working. But I also love my babies with all my heart, and I do this line of work to be present with them. It's a constant battle to be more present and aware of where my time is being spent.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to start. Stop caring about what other people think on the internet, do it for you and only you.
  2. Once you start, don't stop. Even if you think something isn't working, you have to give it enough time to let it work or not work.
  3. Test everything. Not everything will work the first time, but you never know if it will work until you try, and there is no shame or harm in "failure." Those are just beta tests for the next version!
