Performance Dietitian - Jenna Braddock
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenna Braddock, Founder and Owner of Make Healthy Easy & Off-Season Athlete, located in Saint Augustine, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and ACSM Certified Personal Trainer that works directly with individuals and groups and creates online content to help Make Healthy Easy. I own two websites: Make Healthy Easy (jennabraddock.com), which provides doable wellness and recipes, digital courses, and counseling and Off-Season Athlete, an online destination created specifically for teen athletes and their parents to get safe and effective information and courses to improve performance.
Tell us about yourself
I decided to become a dietitian as a result of experiencing the power of nutrition as a high school volleyball athlete. It made a huge difference in how I felt and performed. I always knew I wanted to work with athletes and set out from day 1 of my career to build that skill set. What I have realized, though, after practicing for 17 years, is that EVERYONE wants to perform in their life. No matter the roles you have in your life, you want to be your best. I love helping people understand their bodies and their unique needs to achieve their best energy and reach their personal goals, whether that's showing up as a great parent or a great athlete.
What motivates me to do this work is my personal purpose of bringing joy to people. My clients describe working with me as a fun and encouraging experience, and that is success in my book! I want people to walk away from experiencing me in person or online and think, "I can do that!" and then actually go and do whatever thing they've decided is important.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
First of all, just being a business owner is something I am proud of. It happened gradually over time, but I am so thankful to serve others through my company and the many opportunities it has provided my family and me.
Second, I am so happy that I have helped people find joy in their eating, bodies, and health.
Lastly, some specific accomplishments I am proud of are working with influential executives and high-level athletes, writing two cookbooks, and bringing on another woman to work in my business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Working alone is always a challenge for me. I am an extrovert and thrive working with a group. Some of the big decisions I must make in my business come down to just me, and I can second guess myself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- As soon as you can hire someone to help you with work you don't like or want to spend your time on, do it! Don't put it off. You cannot do everything well.
- Find a great counselor and meet with them somewhat regularly.
- Don't sacrifice what you truly value most for the "hustle" of business.
Yes, it takes a lot of hard work to start, run and grow a business, but if you get to that point in the future where your business is successful but your life is bankrupt, I don't think you are truly successful.
