Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeffrey Benson, an Education Consultant & Leadership Coach of Jeffrey Benson LLC, located in Brookline, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Through coaching, consulting, facilitating innovation teams, delivering keynote addresses, and providing workshops and seminars, I support schools to better serve their students, faculty, staff, and leadership.

Tell us about yourself

I have been working in schools for almost 50 years as a teacher, administrator, and now consultant. I believe that everyone who walks into a school wants to have a good day and leave a little smarter and satisfied with their efforts when they go home. Unfortunately, schools have never been structured or resourced to meet that reasonable goal. My work allows me to tap into all the aspirations and possibilities people hold and help them move in those directions—not much can feel better than meeting people in that place.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building up a foundation of local embedded work and also having a national presence through my books, articles, and presentations at conferences.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I've had to learn to be in it for the long game and not worry too much when the work slows down for short periods of time. The pandemic was particularly difficult, and I am very grateful that the business has returned to its pre-pandemic levels.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  • One is to know what you're good at and lean into your strengths, and let people know they're your strengths.
  • Secondly, reach out to peers and mentors to tap into their specific experiences in your field.
  • Finally, figure out which social media platforms truly make a difference in your work, and stay away from everything else.
