Rethinking Self-Care At Work - Jeanette Bronee

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeanette Bronée, Founder of Jeanette Bronée, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a keynote speaker and author, helping people and companies harness change and growth by having the tools to face adversity, navigate uncertainty, and build a healthy culture where people belong, innovate, and work better together.

Tell us about yourself

I believe that the most important and essential resource we have is our humanity. After coaching people one-on-one for 18 years, I realized that for us not just to survive but thrive at work, we need to change the way we work, starting with understanding the impact of self-care on performance, creativity, and culture.

For many years I have thought of self-care as a mindset. Essentially my dad taught me that my mind had to be my friend for me to succeed and thrive in life. I have probably always been focused on mindset, starting with being chosen for the competitive gymnastics team at six years old. My mom struggled to maintain her mental health, which is another reason why I'm so passionate about making work, work better for us by learning the tools of The Self-Care Mindset, which is also the title of my new book.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That I listen deeply to what's happening in the world around me, and I have the willingness and agility to respond and innovate in a constructive way that supports continued growth.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being alone with the care and responsibility that we constantly must bring to our days. No one else will care as much as we do about the work, our customers, and the future. The challenge is to stay curious instead of getting lost in worrying.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure to pause throughout the day to listen, notice, and ask questions instead of just pushing on. The pause is where new thinking happens, and it's easy to get stuck in doing when running and growing a business.
  2. Have peer feedback and people to think with, exchange ideas, and who will be honest with you if your ideas have been thought through. The one with the idea needs other people's reflections to make it work because it always works in our own mind, but others might not get it right away.
  3. Find ways to get inspired by others, by other activities, and by completely different topics than your own. It's easy to get stuck in the rot when our thoughts are always in the same lane. Finding things that feed the soul, our mind, our hearts, and of course, keep a healthy body is how to create long-term motivation to keep going, even when the going is not easy. Being inspired by seeing the impact and potential impact on the people you serve needs a holistic perspective, and we can only achieve that by living in a holistic way.
