Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jean Leggett, Founder of Jean Leggett Consulting Inc., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a career strategist, and I work with clients who are looking to transform their traditional and dull work histories into inspiring and unapologetic career stories so they can land great jobs and get paid what they deserve.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a coach since 2008. When I started my training, they didn't teach us the business side of things, just coach skills. I was always that kid on the playground who was the champion of the other kids, cheering them on. That never changed as I became an adult. As a coach, there have been many different phases of my coach identity - from mindset coach to business coach to career strategist over the last 15 years. But I draw from all of those as I help people better understand how to articulate their innate greatness and tell a better story. I'm motivated each day by seeing clients get that aha! moment and later when they get that job!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There have been so many - when I ran an ed-tech startup, it was giving a TED Talk about teaching kids how to make video games with our software. As a coach, it is easy that I've helped over 600 clients from around the world feel more confident in themselves and their abilities. Seeing folks double their incomes and buy homes for the first time? That is addictive. Knowing that I'm helping families start the generational wealth cycle? That's my legacy.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
When I had a staff at my previous company, I didn't have formal leadership training. We were a startup doing our best. I wish I knew then what I know now: communicate expectations clearly and reinforce them kindly. When we are working with others, expectations talk, and boundaries need to be mission-critical. If we shy away from being clear and things go awry, resentment builds. I did a whole episode of my podcast where I talked about this. Ooof!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it. Do it messy. Do it messy and iterate on it. Don't wait until it feels perfect.
- Give yourself compassion for the days you doubt yourself.
- Hire brilliant people.
