Treatment and Beyond - Jean Lamantia, Registered Dietitian

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jean LaMantia, Owner of Jean LaMantia, Registered Dietitian, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a registered dietitian that helps individuals with cancer, lymphedema, or lipedema to understand and use nutrition to improve their health.

Tell us about yourself

Since high school, I have loved studying science and learning about the body and how it works, and how food can help. Initially, I was focused on how nutrition can help with body weight, but since having cancer at the age of 27, I've been using nutrition to help people get through cancer treatment, reduce their risk of recurrence and help manage side-effects of cancer treatment including lymphedema.

Since learning about lymphedema, I've also begun helping people with lipo-lymphedema and lipedema. It is incredibly rewarding to see the improvements that people can achieve just by changing what they eat.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing my three books has been a great accomplishment for me. Holding something tangible is lovely, and reading the reviews and letters that people send to me, telling me how much my book has helped them, makes me so grateful that my work is helping others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Self-promotion is one of the hardest things. I wish people could just magically know about me, but the demand to be constantly promoting and putting out content is challenging. It's so different from my role in the health care system, where there was a waiting list of people and no need to promote my services.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips that I would give are.

  1. Choose a niche that defines your ideal client, but don't be afraid to pivot or evolve as things change or new knowledge becomes available.
  2. Don't be afraid to be the first to do something.
  3. If you feel that you have a book inside of you, then write it! It's a great sense of accomplishment and a great way to establish your expertise and help those that can benefit.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Teaching group classes has been a game-changer for me. My Lymphedema Nutrition School program was my first group class and is still going strong. If you like working with groups, then I recommend facilitating group programs.
