Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaymee Frankel, Founder of JayTeach, located in East Setauket, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
JayTeach offers educational services such as private tutoring, college admissions coaching, and curriculum development with a whole-child approach. My customers are students K-12, parents of school-aged children, and teachers.
Tell us about yourself
I am an NYS-certified classroom teacher, learning specialist, and private tutor. I have been a classroom teacher and private tutor/coach for the past decade for students K-12 and beyond. Additionally, I spent three years as an academic enrichment specialist at an NYC private school. After many years in the school system, I wanted to expand my reach and start my company, JayTeach. I have always had a passion for connecting with students, getting to know them as people, and guiding them to achieve academic and personal success. I look beyond academics and incorporate social-emotional learning into my sessions—something that truly motivates me!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say my biggest accomplishment is my ability to notice and see past "limiting beliefs." There are so many facets of my business, and I have clear visions for growth for each of them. I would also say my biggest accomplishment is making the decision to start this company.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the most difficult things is just how much learning comes with starting a business (marketing, technology, etc.). It has the potential to get overwhelming, but I always take my own advice: "One step at a time."
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create a schedule to compartmentalize— and know that schedules are just guidelines - they can change!
- Think about your ideal customer—what are you going to help them fix?
- Notice any "limiting beliefs" you might have. These are negative thoughts that simply get in your way and limit your growth.
- Think about your WHY. If you don't know why you are doing something, why are you doing it??
