Your Coffee Retail Store & More - Javanut

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Di Crescenzo, owner of Javanut, located in Milton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-owned retailer located in Milton, Ontario that provides Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate single-serve pods from an assortment of brands from around the world, including our own backyard, Ontario.
If you prefer whole bean coffee, we have a great selection available from Ontario roasters like Carvalho, Firebat, Muskoka Roastery, Dark City, and Hale.

At Javanut, we are proud to support our local food artisans. We have Hot Sauces, Salad Dressings, Soups, Cookies, Chocolates, and other products that are from local businesses right here in Ontario.

Tell us about yourself

I realized that there was a need for a retail store in our town that would provide the experience and education in the coffee and tea industry. I was always a big believer in supporting local artisans. This business allows me to display my passion by carrying many local roasted coffees, hand-blended teas, and local artisan foods.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started a non-franchise new business with no revenue no customers and have enjoyed seeing the business grow, flourish, and withstand the harsh environment of the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things I find of being a business owner is maintaining the constant drive and passion for fueling the business's growth. Business owners always have to perform many roles within the company, such as Sales, Research, Marketing, Accounting, and sometimes IT.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have a detailed and extensive business plan.
  2. If a brand new business, make sure you have enough savings/other income to support yourself for the first two years of business.
  3. Set aside enough funds for marketing.
