Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Chatfield, a freelance cartoonist located in New York, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a cartoonist -- my clients are everyone from books and magazines like the New Yorker to apps like Waking Up and other private clients and businesses.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a professional cartoonist for 20 years, working across all disciplines of cartooning. I love the challenge of using cartoons to help bring humor and clarity to various topics.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That I can still pay my rent as a cartoonist after 20 years! (And that I still get to do what I love for a living.)
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Chasing up payments, finding new work, keeping up with deadlines -- you can only outsource so much.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I'd say the best advice is as follows:
- Work from a Calendar, Not a To-Do List: https://jasonchatfield.medium.com/work-from-a-calendar-not-a-to-do-list-9c93ea88fbcf
- Learn to say NO to the right things: no-vember.net
- And if you're working as an artist/writer: always carve out time outside of work to draw/write for yourself.
