Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and hair care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jasmine Batie, Founder of #SALON, located in Marietta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a trendy boutique hair salon in Marietta, Georgia. We are unique with regard to our clientele because we are a full-service salon for everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or hair type. Anyone who walks through our doors is able to receive the treatment they’re looking for - from blowouts to silk presses to braids to balayage to vivid colors to just a quick trim. Our goal is to embrace every client’s natural beauty and for #salon to be their go-to place for pampering.
Tell us about yourself
I have always loved the beauty world and personally enjoy expressing my personality through style. I was blessed to begin working with a well-known salon in Georgia, and after managing there, an idea came to life. I saw an opportunity to take the luxury model and expand it to be more inclusive. I’m motivated by the women who choose to work alongside me! It sets me on fire to watch them evolve and grow as stylists in the profession that means so much to them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is two-fold - firstly, in opening a business during the pandemic, and now, in celebrating our two year anniversary! Being able to watch our loving clients return each and every day and knowing they had an amazing experience with us...is truly a feeling I can't describe. It makes me know in my heart I did the right thing by taking the leap at an uncertain time and starting #SALON.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The most challenging part of being a business owner is managing the unexpected and the fear of failure. I realize, however, that the only way to be successful is to fall short a few times. I try and always remember to give myself the grace I give to others and know that this is a learning process. When things go awry that are outside of my control, I take a deep breath, make a plan, and chuckle a little bit. My biggest word of advice to any young entrepreneur is to learn to be adaptable and resilient!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don’t try and do everything yourself! Find a community of people you align with and outsource the components you don’t have expertise in, like accounting and marketing.
- Use the wisdom of those who have come before you! Talk with people who have gone down this path and learn from their wins and losses.
- Invest in good people - culture means everything in a small business.
