Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Miwako Sakabayashi, Founder and CEO of Japanese Abacus Math School, located in Portland, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I teach mental math to students ages 5 to 18 using the abacus. We are the Japanese Abacus Math School of Portland. I also have a MasterClass that uses abacus to help adults keep their brains young and active.
Tell us about yourself
I was not sure what to do when I came to this country from Japan. My former husband said to me: "You are an abacus champion. You should teach." I thought about it and decided that it was the right thing for me. Now, more than 20 years later, I still enjoy teaching children to understand math.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I like when my former students contact me to tell me what an impact JAMS has had on their lives. They credit their success in life to their abacus training. It makes me very proud.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Americans are not aware of the power of abacus. I have to work hard to convince parents that it can benefit their children, not only in math but in overall focus.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create a clear plan of action before you start.
- Be confident in your ability.
- Work hard.
