Award Winning Author, Poet, and Artist - Janet Kravetz

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janet Kravetz, an Amazon bestselling and multi-award winning author based in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an author, who writes poetry and novels mainly for teens/young adults, but the topics I cover are of interest to adults as well. I write about climate change, mental health, the rise of technology and AI, spirituality, peace, and diversity. I'm a #1 Amazon bestselling and multi-award winning author of the sci-fi/fantasy novel Sky Curse: The Chosen Five and the poetry book Reaching Beyond Ourselves: Leading a Spiritual, Peaceful, and Diverse World.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in Ukraine and grew up in Israel. I immigrated to Nova Scotia in 2009 with a dream of writing in English about topics that may have a global social-good impact while earning a living from my writing. I would like to coin a term for this. I'm an aspiring "Social Authorpreneur." A Social Authorpreneur combines for-profit book sales with non-paid advocacy work on topics that promote social good. What motivates me each day to do what I do is my passion for writing and social change.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My debut sci-fi/fantasy novel Sky Curse: The Chosen Five, was published in August 2022. By November 2022, it had already won 3 silver book awards and received rave reviews and significant Amazon.com sales. For example, one of the Amazon book reviews by a reader named Grady Harp says: "[she] is quietly becoming a major voice in apocalyptic thinking!"

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being an author, who wants to measure the social-good impact of my work, can be challenging. There are no existing frameworks or networks for such authors.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

You never know where you can get your next big idea, so do the following:

  1. Network in all stages of starting, running, and growing a business.
  2. Be an early adapter. Support initiatives/projects that appeal to you before they become mainstream.
  3. Stay curious and keep learning from everyone and everything.
