Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamie Kim, Owner of Jamie's Farm, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Jamie's Farm is an award-winning granola company focused on creative flavors with thoughtfully sourced ingredients. Our customers are natural and organic shoppers who care about the quality of their food and the impact that their food choices make on their own health, the ecosystem, and the community that surrounds them.

Tell us about yourself

I started the business when I was in college, studying hospitality management. For years, I had been cooking for my friends and family, inspired by my time working in a 3 Michelin star restaurant.

I decided to start a granola business because I wanted to make good food more accessible on an everyday basis and bring transparently sourced ingredients from local farmers to the grocery store. Hearing how much my customers love my granola and working closely with suppliers who truly care about bringing delicious, sustainably made ingredients is what motivates me each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was turning this into a living after graduating college. It wasn't even a possibility that occurred to me when I first started the business...but I kept going at it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Reminding myself that I am not my business. I always try to maintain a work-life balance and carve out time for all my other hobbies and interests. Life should be fun, and owning a business shouldn't be everything!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to your intuition. Write down your Why. Ultimately you know what's best for you and your business.
  2. Try not to get caught up in what other businesses are doing. Everyone's on their own path.
  3. Read the book Profit First—it'll change the way you think about building a business well-suited for your lifestyle and how you allocate your expenses.
