Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamie Cano Dru, a Career Transition Coach based in London, UK.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My coaching business helps ambitious professionals navigate major career transitions, whether that be starting a new job, taking on a new leadership position, changing industries, or any other big career shift. I also help new coaches build, develop and market their coaching business using the experience I have gained through my own coaching business. This part of my business is going to be a greater focus for me in 2023.
Tell us about yourself
Throughout my career, I've been invested in the development and success of others, and I really enjoy helping to solve tricky problems. Coaching is a great way for me to help others make transformative changes in their lives, and that motivates me to do what I do. I also make sure that my client base is internationally diverse. I have lived and worked in the UK, Australia, UAE, Colombia, and Spain, and traveled to many other countries around this amazing world. I love to connect with new people and understand other cultures.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've been invited to speak about how to build a coaching business by leading business schools, podcasts, and the International Coaching Federation. I've done that alongside leading one of the world's largest "Marketing for Coaches" communities. But my greatest accomplishment is helping others to achieve change in their professional lives through my coaching. I've helped people find their motivation, start new careers, change industries, and much more. I can't tell you how rewarding it is to help someone unlock their potential and thrive!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Choosing where to focus each day. As a business owner, there is nobody giving you instructions. You need to wake up, get motivated, and prioritise the most important things that will help build your business. For me, choosing where to focus is one of the hardest parts of being a business owner. But having the freedom to do whatever you want each day is incredibly liberating.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Define your niche clearly. You need to know precisely who you want to work with and their major challenges. Then make sure you're really passionate about helping to solve those challenges!
- Learn to write online. Writing online is a great way of winning new business. It takes time to build credibility and hone your craft. Get started today, and you'll thank yourself in the future.
- Acknowledge your fears. Work with someone and get out all the fears and limiting beliefs you might have, e.g., "I don't deserve to be paid XX," "People will laugh when I tell them I'm a coach," etc. The sooner you address them and have the plan to tackle them, the sooner you can get out of your way and build the business you want.
