Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with James Oermann, a marketing consultant, author, and speaker, based in Jefferson City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a writer and speaker/teacher primarily. I write development and marketing material for a wide variety of clients. I have worked with non-profits and churches to find out how to serve their communities better. I speak at schools about focus, career goals, overcoming problems, and current affairs that are important to the future of the planet and society as a whole. I have studied meditation, mindfulness, and sociology for many years. I combine these to help people and organizations to be their best. I have written several books and given speeches on the topics of mindfulness, focus, finding the truth, and more. I call this "The Jedi of Success." I lead retreats and have given topics about the future, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, Christmas Humphreys, and other spiritual leaders.

Tell us about yourself

I was interested in social science and writing in middle school quite a bit. I went on to write seriously and study areas like martial arts, Eastern religion and philosophy, history, technology, music, and psychology. In my youth, I did historical reenactment and built reproductions of antique furniture, handy crafts, soap, candles, and leatherwork. Professionally I have been involved with living history and historical reconstruction. I have done extended stays with religious groups studying meditation and the history and life code of monastics. I have been writing books for a fee, marketing material, and SEO copy, and also doing grant writing and organizational development. I have played music since about age 10. My great, great grandfather Conrad was a fiddler and one of the last working blacksmiths in Missouri in the town named for our family, Oermann, Missouri. To some extent, I believe I take after him in a tradition of hard work, building things worthwhile, and honesty about life and its highs and lows. Today I combine my interests and skills to understand how to help people market themselves and their products/services and also become focused and live purpose-driven lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I wrote an original book for a fee about a subject I knew some about, but not in any great detail before.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being responsible for your own success or failure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know your talents and shortcomings, study the numbers of your business, remain realistic and be positive.

Where can people find you and your business?
