Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jen Dewar, CEO of Jalydew, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Jalydew is a boutique marketing agency, and our clients are HR technology and marketing technology companies.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been drawn to marketing because it's a fun mix of creative and analytical work. I'm motivated by the impact I can make on people who use my client's software. My HR tech clients help connect people to find jobs and have better experiences at work, which is so important considering how much time each of us spends at work. My marketing tech clients help people like me do our jobs better, so we can make a stronger impact at work. I love how the right tech can make our lives easier and better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm really proud of the long tenure I have with most of my clients.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

All of the non-marketing stuff is challenging because it's not my area of expertise. Things like accounting/taxes and administrative work (like sending proposals) are not my favorite.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the intersection of what you're interested in, what you're good at, and what people are willing to pay for. That will help you build a successful business.
  2. Outsource areas of your business that you're not interested in or good at. For example, I outsource my accounting and connect my clients with designers as needed for marketing projects.
  3. Try to maintain a realistic workload. It's easy to get bogged down in administrative work or say yes to something when you know you shouldn't. Try to focus on the 20% of the things you do that produce 80% of your business results. Set time aside for the administrative work you have to do. And know that it's ok to say "no," or "not right now."
