Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marie-Josee Katcho, pastry chef, of Jaimée, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an online, fun, delicious pastry and confectionary shop in the mile end. My customers are sweet, wonderful people in my community that like to share treats and sweets such as cookies, cakes, candies (marshmallows, caramels). Everything I make is hand-made with the utmost care for the ingredients as well as packaging (mainly organic and compostable). My team is composed of my friends and family (my best friend, her kids, their roommate, my kids...), and so it really is a family business.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the food industry for as long as I can remember as either a full-time or side job during my studies in university. I created Jaimée sweets & cie as an endeavor to share that inner spark in me that drives my creative side to make desserts that can, simply put, make people say, mmm-mmm:) I also wanted to create opportunities for work for myself, my friends, and those around me. I offer my services to non-profit organizations and my kitchen or help to those in need of such opportunities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Not sure how to answer that question, though, if I were to venture, I think my biggest accomplishment would be the daily practice that allows me to navigate this business in a graceful way. I don't always get it right. Mainly I really try to create an environment for myself and others that feels safe and joyful.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For myself, it's the responsibility of the business as well as the people that work for me. The responsibility is to run the ship, so to speak, and take care of my crew and clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be mindful of the anxiety that presents itself and acknowledge it.
  2. Be kind to yourself by taking some time for self-care.
  3. Be gentle.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Financing and customers do help. Aim high!
