Fine Jewelers Since 1945 - Jae's Jewelers
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jillian Hornik, managing partner of Jae's Jewelers, located in Coral Gables, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Jae's Jewelers is a 77-year-old 3rd generation fine jewelry store. We carry new designer jewelry, engagement rings, wedding bands, vintage jewelry, and pre-owned watches. Our on-site workshop employs a full-time goldsmith and 2 Graduate Gemologists to custom create and repair jewelry. Our clients include generations of local families who celebrate all of life's milestones with us. Due to our location along the famed Miracle Mile in Downtown Coral Gables, we also assist many local business people and tourists alike.
Tell us about yourself
Since my grandparents founded the business in 1945, I grew up in the store. My first "job" was cleaning the glass cases as a child; then, I graduated to making bows. After that, I learned how to wrap a gift box properly. Once in college, I began working during winter break, assisting the staff on the sales floor. After college, I attended the Gemological Institute of America and received my Graduate Gemologist degree. After graduation, I worked at another family-owned jeweler in Newport Beach, California, that specialized in large diamonds, high-end watches, and designer jewelry. After five years, I moved back to Miami to work in the family business full time. It has been nine years now, and I can't imagine doing anything else. My motivation is the excitement of my clients. Whether it be custom creating an engagement ring or selecting wedding bands, I really get to learn about my clients and their personal relationships. It is such a happy surprise when a repeat client shows up and even brings a new friend to introduce. It is that trust and deep knowledge of the industry that keeps me going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There are two accomplishments that stand out. The first was receiving my Certified Gemologist title from the American Gem Society. Only a handful of jewelers across the country qualify due to educational and ethical requirements. My other accolade was receiving Businesswoman of the Year from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in 2015. The honor and recognition from our local community meant (and continues to mean) so much!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The toughest part of being a business owner is juggling your operational responsibilities with your industry responsibilities. I currently serve as sales manager, inventory buyer, HR director, marketing manager, and e-commerce developer! It is difficult to choose which task is most important each day because your job as an owner is never done. There is always more to do in one day, and that is without spending a few hours each day working directly with clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Manage your finances wisely...every purchase you make for the business should be thought out, especially recurring fees. Profit margin can make or break your ability to survive.
- Forget all the work on your desk, and focus on the client in front of you.
- Take a few minutes each day to distract yourself from work. You cannot be "on" all the time. A quick break or walk outside can re-set your brain for a more productive day.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I've been lucky enough to work with my father for the past nine years. The experience has allowed me to understand how much effort goes into running a retail store. It is nearly impossible for one person to manage it all. Therefore, selecting the right staff is extremely important. A good hire can inspire. A bad case kills the company culture, despite their many qualifications. Another concept I've learned is that businesses must evolve to survive.
