Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacqueline Shuler, creator of Jacqueline Originals, located in Castle Rock, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started my business, Jacqueline Originals, in 1971. I am a professional calligrapher and have hand-lettered several hundred works. My main focus is personalizing wedding gifts that I have composed. This I mat and frame. I also have lines of Native American, Irish, Inspirational, Family, Sympathy, and Home themes. My work appeals to thoughtful people who want unique gifts.

Tell us about yourself

I am self-motivated because I love what I do. I want to market my skills to make this world a better place through inspiration and beauty. I am now 83 and still get up at 5 a.m., swim, and meditate before starting my day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has fantastic customer service. I really work at communicating with my clients, thanking them, and making sure they are satisfied.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it has been figuring out marketing what works. It's a lot of trial and error and spending money.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Remember that you have to starve for three years before your income can support you. Keep your day job unless you have a sugar daddy! Work at producing quality products, getting input from clients.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Research is important. Who else is producing items similar to yours? How do they market them? What are the price ranges? Will you need a loan to start? I had no loans, but I was teaching art full time and building my business on weekends. Now that I am retired, I spend most of my day on the computer, creating new work and filling orders on Etsy.com.
