Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacqueline Badal, a Pediatric Dietitian based in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a clinical dietitian specializing in pediatric nutrition. However, I see both children and adults. My focus is listening to clients first and creating unique nutrition plans to help overcome various nutrition challenges or meet specific individual goals.

Tell us about yourself

I developed a passion for nutrition in my desire to spend my life helping others. After completing a bachelor of science in clinical nutrition at the University of California Davis, I received my Master of Science in Food and Nutrition from Florida State University. I graduated from the FSU Dietetic Internship program and went on to become a Registered Dietitian in 2012. This professional designation required successfully passing a national registration exam for dietitians, in addition to required coursework and clinical experience. I then began to work as a pediatric dietitian in large academic hospitals in Texas as well as in California. I gained clinical knowledge and practical experience and developed lasting professional relationships. Over the years, I yearned to spend more time with my patients, so I recently started a private practice that works with people both online and in their homes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having the opportunity to spend more time with my clients, answering their questions, and helping discover individual solutions has been the most rewarding part of starting my own practice. I not only can recommend dietary changes but help them restock their pantry and refrigerator in the process.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being disconnected from other healthcare workers was initially difficult. However, I very quickly realized that there were many other physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals who were interested in connecting and collaborating. I am learning more every day about how to be efficient on my own and learn from other private practice groups in my community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to do something you are passionate about.
  2. Reach out to others who have gone before for wisdom and guidance.
  3. Always appreciate those who support and believe in you.
