Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeanette Dozier, Founder of J. Dozier Artistry, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an Internationally Published Professional Makeup Artist from Baltimore, MD. A career I never saw coming yet cannot see myself not doing. It all began with 1 MAC lipstick that my best friend bought me, and the rest is history. With encouragement from friends and coworkers, the thought became a reality. I have studied under the greats to perfect my craft. I've traveled to Jamaica, The US Virgin Islands, Miami, California, and numerous other states to do what I love.
Tell us about yourself
It all started with a MAC lipstick my best friend purchased me, which I felt was the best lipstick I had ever had. At that point, I learned how to do my own makeup and perfect it through practice and attending sessions that The MAC counter offered when they had a new collection coming out. I would get compliments and inquiries about doing my friends' makeup, yet I wasn't confident. Finally, I became so frustrated in the job I was working at that time and decided to just go for it. The first big decision I made was to attend The Makeup Show in New York. I went there without telling anyone and with no credentials, which was the best decision I ever made. Once I came back from New York, it was on. I took all the classes I could find in my area and other cities. I built my kit from the ground up and began taking clients. It was hard; I was nervous. I had to fight through my fears, the nonsupport, and the competition, but it was the best decision I've ever made. I believe God placed this in my heart as my passion, and it keeps me motivated every day. I get joy when my clients love how they look and feel about themselves when I finish their faces.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment is that I didn't give in to my fears. I've been published, had clients on TV, did New York Fashion Week, and have traveled to places I may have never gone. Yet the biggest joy will always be the smile on a client's face when I've done their makeup. Being a business owner is not for the faint at heart; you face many challenges, and you will probably be the biggest one. The solution is to know what works for you and what doesn't, manage your time, love what you do (some days you won't), and build a tribe of support.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The biggest hurdle I had was me - believing I was good enough and I really was talented. Also, finances and how to balance to make a profit and maintain my needed product. One other hurdle was managing my time to accommodate my client's needs and ensure I still made the appointment an enjoyable experience. My makeup may not be what others are doing, but I found my lane and perfected it, and I was just what the doctor ordered. The last class I attended in DC at the Bakery Studio Makeup Masterclass with Kenyatta Greene was the key to my success.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top 3 tips I can give anyone with a business or idea is first to find your passion and what you love to do. When you do that, it will never feel like work. Next, perfect your craft. That may include finding a mentor, taking a class, researching, and reading books. The last piece of advice I have is to be humble and kind to yourself. Most things don't happen overnight, but with consistency, passion, knowledge, and belief in yourself, there is nothing you cant do.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Believe in yourself and what you have to offer the world. There is nothing you can't do if you put the work into it. Stay positive, humble, and kind. Don't forget always to be grateful.
