Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Rudyk, President of It's Logical Strategic Planning Services, located in Sherwood Park, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a strategic planning - high-performance consulting company. We have a unique ability to leverage Priority Based Budgeting and integrate it into very intentional strategic planning throughout any organization. Customers are primarily municipal government but also include non-profits, associations, foundations, families, and individuals.

Tell us about yourself

While working in my long-time position in municipal government, I felt I had value in contributing in a broader sense to the municipal sector. To do so, I felt I had to gamble on myself and what I could bring to others. I left a 29-year relationship with my previous employer and created It's Logical. I am a passionate believer in the ability to bring high performance to government - in the most logical way. I feel we are in the "business" of creating conditions for our communities to achieve their greatest long-term well-being aspirations. To do so requires this understanding of our primary purpose. To then have that clarity applied to all aspects of service delivery. Leadership stamina then allows for decisions of priority to be made - we support those offerings of the greatest value to achieve these well-being aspirations while moving away from those of minimal relevance. Priority Based Budgeting is a powerful tool to allow for this reallocation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a business that has brought value to the marketplace and brings me joy in doing the work. I have so many long-term relationships through this venture!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balancing being busy doing the work and marketing to acquire more work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ensure you have something that is both valuable to others and brings you absolute joy while doing it.
  2. Seek out advice from those who have already had success and who you feel have similar values to you.
  3. Err on the side of saying yes to work unless you get a sense of a values misalignment. Doing work for the sake of doing work while compromising your happiness will not be a successful long-term strategy.
