Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeanine Lynch, owner of It Takes The Cake, located in Lawrenceville, GA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
It Takes the Cake specializes in custom decorated wedding cakes and edible-art cakes. We absolutely love to give our customers their hearts' desires in cake, so we pay attention to what they are really wanting; we read between the lines sometimes. We believe we are not so much in the cake business as in the "give them their dream" business. We aim for something that will be the "WOW Factor!" and still taste really, really good! After all, It Takes the Cake to make the party complete!℠
We proudly serve the Metro Atlanta and surrounding areas including North Georgia.
We are a fully licensed, inspected, and insured Georgia Cottage Home Bakery, which means we don't keep a storefront.
Tell us about yourself
We actually are artists and were working in the art finishes and custom art industry when the market fell out for anything luxury. At that time I had a young friend who needed help with all the things the maid of honor would do because her sister was on bedrest. So I said I would be glad to help her. She needed a cake for her bridal shower and I thought "Ok; Sure! I can do that!" Hers was our very first custom cake, and from there, we were repeatedly asked to make other custom cakes.
With that clicking for us, we delved right into the custom cake business and have been busy ever since! --And that was 14 years ago. We are so grateful to all of our customers!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Feeling confident that we can bring a bride's desires/dreams on the cake to fruition. Wedding cakes can be scary if you are not seasoned.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being able to trust that we can continually "make it."
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
1. Know your business; research the field; research the competition.
2. If you can, start out in your home, then grow into a location as needed.
3. Don't NOT start your business because you are afraid; give it all you've got!
Anything else you'd like to share?
Always, always be willing to give a little more than they pay for. Pay attention to what they say and ask for; get a feel for their personality and their needs. Stay in contact and use clear communication; be available to field their questions and help them see your vision of their desires. Pay attention to the details. Excellent detailing makes the difference. You can rise above your competition with the right attitude and excellent service.
