What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a traditional sculptor focusing on miniature figures. My customers are gamers and collectors.
Tell us about yourself
Growing up, I really loved looking at miniature figures. In my hometown, there were a few bookstores that would hold painting contests and competitions for Warhammer and other Games Workshop games. I could never afford to play, but I loved the look of them. I received HeroQuest for my 8th birthday and fell in love with the game. I can still remember how engrossing it was for me at the time. Anyhow, when I was in my mid-thirties, I started wondering how the miniatures were produced back in the 80s and found out they were all hand sculpted. I wanted to see if I could do something similar and have been sculpting ever since. I'm motivated by a desire to become a better artist and realize my ideas as accurately as I imagine them. The fear of failure also helps get me out of bed in the morning.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have had a steady stream of commissions over the last 4 years and have run two Kickstarters. Although I haven't reached my goal as an artist, I have persistently pursued my vision and continue to, despite various setbacks.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It is difficult perusing artistic endeavors, particularly if you are working independently. This type of situation takes a certain amount of self-confidence and diligence, especially in the face of negativity from yourself or others.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have confidence in yourself and your abilities.
- It is okay to fail.
- Make sure you are working at something you enjoy and value. Working with just a monetary goal in mind will more than likely leave you hating your work.
