Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Robinson, Founder of Iris and West Lash Co., located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a lash and brow studio in Los Angeles. We provide modern and minimalist services(lash extensions, lash lifts, brow lamination, and shaping) while taking great care to maintain the integrity of your natural lashes and brows. Iris and West is for all types of people- the main thing in common being that all of our team and clients are fervently going after their lives, and we love to give them a little boost in their beauty regime.
Tell us about yourself
I started my career as a hairstylist and makeup artist and quickly grew to love doing lash extensions. I launched Iris+West in 2015 in response to the myth that eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes (they don't!). I really wanted to create a space where people could have this service done and feel taken care ok.
For me, motivation comes in many different forms. I believe in what we are doing and the services we are providing; that's the main driving force, but I also LOVE the team I've put together and really enjoy being at work and getting to know our clients. It gives me such an awesome sense of self to be running a business that helps people feel good.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Surviving the pandemic! It's been such a difficult couple of years for everyone, and the beauty industry is no different, but we made it through and have just hired another lash artist. We are growing even after all of that!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Some days I find it difficult to wear so many hats- I'm admittedly not great at asking for help, though I'm working on it! Over the years, I've learned that it's really important to know what you don't know and find the right people to allocate other tasks to.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I think it's important to be honest with yourself and why you want to start a business, it's not for everyone, even if I feel like it's not for me some days. You've got to give yourself a break and rest sometimes- work hard at your dream but don't burn yourself out, you're no good to anyone that way, and my lost piece of advice would be to understand your customers. Why are they picking you? What are you offering them?
