What's your business, and who are your customers?
We offer online, self-paced professional development courses for engineers on topics related to sustainable development, for example, solar energy, life-cycle assessments, planetary boundaries, climate change, blockchain, and systems thinking. We are constantly developing new courses and updating old ones to ensure that we can keep our students up to date with the latest developments in sustainability science and technology.
Tell us about yourself
I am a chemical engineer specializing in air and water treatment using ozone. One project got me particularly interested in solar power because it was located in a remote area with an unstable power grid. I found the topic of solar power and renewable energy, in general, so fascinating that I decided to share what I learned in the form of an online course. I enjoyed the process of researching, writing, and delivering courses so much that I basically haven't been able to stop since then. In fact, it doesn't actually feel like work. The work itself is what motivates me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Starting the business. It seems daunting at first but just take it one step at a time. You can do it.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is the uncertainty. When you start a business, you can no longer predict your income, which can sometimes be uncomfortable.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Push through the times when you don't feel motivated to work. Commit to working 30 minutes on those days. You'll be surprised how quickly they pass and how much longer you will work once you start.
- Don't wait until your product is "perfect." People will buy your product or service if it is needed. Once they do, ask them what they thought about it, how you can improve, and what other products or services they may need in the future. This real-world data will help you improve your offering.
- Keep up-to-date with what is happening in your field. Watch what your competitors are doing regarding their offerings, advertising, etc. And find out who and where your customers are so you can focus your marketing spending.
