What's your business, and who are your customers?
Intrepic Journey helps heart-centered leaders create organizational impact by using Appreciate Inquiry to unlock collective wisdom within individuals and organizations. Impact is created through Organizational Clarity, also known as purpose, mission, vision, values & behaviors, the inner & outer work of conscious leadership, and intentional event design & facilitation.
Tell us about yourself
When I started in the workforce, I was disillusioned and disappointed with the idea of leaving our person sh&t at home and putting your butt in a seat. I knew that I wanted something more congruent and thought others might as well. This led me to create a purpose-driven organization where we proved the idea that we can be profitable and make a difference in the world.
After selling that company in 2020, I started Intrepic Journey to focus on the parts of my visionary role that I loved best. They were also the parts that helped companies thrive at the intersection of having a larger purpose and how we each take our own leadership responsibilities to be better tomorrow than we are today. Purpose & Accountability.
At this point in my life, I am motivated to be a better version of myself each day, and this motivates me to unlock the collective wisdom of all those around me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It is definitely making a difference in the lives of others. This has happened by creating space for all employees to be seen and heard in a way that can bring them to tears. It is lifting everyone up in an organization and creating psychological safety for all voices to say what needs to be said without concern.
It happens today when I help unlock this for other organizations. Sometimes it's simple and sometimes complex, but when companies allow people to bring their whole selves to work, that is the beginning of the process for all stakeholders to flourish.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Whenever you add other people, things become more complex. That said, they also are what makes it all so rewarding. The hard part for me is when the company and an employee have outgrown each other. Speaking the words that someone is losing their job is challenging but what's really hard is when that person is not willing to own any of the responsibility in the situation.
While I am not perfect at it, I believe in straight-talk with heart and having conversations along the way to help an individual thrive in an organization. That said, sometimes it's not the right fit, and an individual's purpose can no longer be fulfilled inside your company. I always care too much and connect with my team like family, making it complicated when there is a separation.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start with a purpose, and create your organization clarity framework from day one. Your purpose will likely never change, but the rest will shift as your organization grows. This reduces waste and rework, but you have clarity on where you are headed. It also attracts others who want to help you fulfill your purpose.
- Lead yourself first. By this, I mean, start a journey to be better tomorrow than you are today. Throughout a lifetime, it could mean all kinds of work to help you heal from trauma, let go of your ego, and build practices to help you lead yourself and others more equanimously.
- Hire the right people! If you're not good at it, get outside help. Then invest in developing your team. People want to use their skills and build new ones!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am passionate about helping to create a better world by having more conscious leaders running our companies. Creating companies that do good and do well lifts all stakeholders. This requires us to help transform CEOs who are not purpose-driven and build the CEOs of tomorrow by guiding emerging leaders. Millennials and GenZ understand this and will likely not settle for anything less.
