Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meredith Messenger, founder, and CEO of InsureGood, LLC., located in Hartford, CT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
InsureGood helps to safeguard and scale small businesses by helping to manage the seen and unseen risks in their business through our business consulting and insurance services, enabling them to build a foundation for lasting success and impact in our communities.
We are 100% local and woman-owned. And working with us means that you're reinvesting in the future of our communities. Through our herProject, 20% of profits go to providing opportunities and capital to minority and female-led startups that can change the trajectory of local families and our communities.
Tell us about yourself
After 15+ years working for various firms ranging from Fortune 100 to local businesses, I opened InsureGood with the mission of operational and insurance expertise more accessible to women and minorities because I saw that the current market left out a significant portion of the population who needed them most. The focus on closing the business success and wealth gap that exists for women and minorities keeps me motivated and inspired to keep going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In Fall of 2021, as a start-up, we wanted to demonstrate a commitment to our mission of providing education, business opportunities, and mentorship to other women in business through our Women With Impact Summit. We successfully hosted 80+ women in our 2-day summit and raised over $2,300 to support victims of domestic violence. We exist to make a meaningful impact in our communities, so it was a joy to see an event like this that benefited so many women and children successfully launch and make an impact.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
In my opinion, the most difficult part of being a business owner, especially in these early years, is managing through the constant ups and downs that come with business ownership and remaining steadfast in your resolve to make it work because you believe so strongly in it. There is no straight line to success, and the entrepreneurial journey is extremely challenging and emotionally turbulent.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, I would encourage you to build and nurture a strong and supportive network. Your network will play a large role in your success, support you during low points, and open doors for you that you didn't know existed.
Next, it is critical to have a trusted business mentor to help guide you through the most critical decisions you will need to make in the early years. Having an expert opinion, someone who's been there and successfully navigated the same situations and experiences, is invaluable.
Finally, I would advise you to have a strong "why," a bigger purpose and mission that motivates and drives you even when the odds are against you. You're worn out from the hard work of entrepreneurship.
