Putting Improv Into Personal Improvement - Inspire Me Mr V

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Van Haecke, Founder of Inspire Me Mr V, located in Des Moines, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with individuals and organizations who are ready to improve their communication, collaboration, and essential skills to develop strong, effective, empathic leaders. I use the tenants of improvisation to develop skills so we feel comfortable stepping outside our comfort zone, taking big risks, and learning to listen actively. Everyone can learn the skills of improvisation. It's time to start living a "Yes, And..." Life while surrounded by "yeah, but" people.

Tell us about yourself

After studying and performing improv for 20 years, I realized that these essential skills could be learned by anyone. I work with adults and high school students and have seen the transformations possible from this art form. I get motivated by laughter, and in my workshops, there's lots of laughter as we work together in a shared experience. It's a beautiful thing to watch a hesitant person create a song on the spot after a 3-hour workshop.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business is still young. I've been fortunate enough to provide a number of successful applied improv workshops for local corporations, public education, and private colleges. Having a former adult student find me on campus over a year after our class and have her express how often she applies what we learned has been truly rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I struggle with getting my name and message out to the right people. In networking events and through social posts, I often hear, "that's a great idea! I can see the value in it." Yet, I'm still struggling to meet the right decision-makers or higher management where I could bring value.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. In the beginning, it's okay to work the hustle or have a full-time job while supporting your dream.
  2. Give yourself permission to experiment, fail, evaluate, and try again!
  3. People want to hear your story and help. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and be specific about how others can help.
