Inspired by Dance, Pilates & Yoga - MISFITMETHOD
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey with health and wellness, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amber Joliat, owner of MISFITMETHOD, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Tell us all about your business...
The Misfitmethod is a multidimensional movement experience. Rooted in Yoga, Informed by Pilates, inspired by Dance, each class is unique and set to inspiring music. This method creates shapes and movement that intentionally untangle the physical body, encouraging the emotional body to release what feels stuck, held, or tangled up inside, resulting in a shift of energy inside and all around, tapping into a higher vibration or frequency, so we walk around in the world connected to our light.
What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?
I’ve been a dancer since age 3; I began teaching dance at age 12 and have only ever blended dance, art, and teaching together since then, making my career three decades deep now. After working for countless other studios and never feeling embraced, accepted, or celebrated for being different, I took a leap of faith and opened my own.
My movement method is a unique expression, a language of itself. I have always been a trailblazer ahead of trends, never following the “norm” I’m grounded in my passion for movement, my artistic style. High energy is infectious when you feel good; you radiate outward good vibes, which can be life-changing. That is motivation enough even when I feel tired or sleepy (as I have a toddler). Moving my physical body untangles the emotional knots, which change my energy from low to high. It’s miraculous.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Keeping at it for all this time. The industry has changed so much in the time I’ve been in it. Rolling with the changing times, not remaining stuck in one way, dancing with the fails as much as the accomplishments. Unafraid to keep learning, growing, and evolving, it’s the eternal life, death, rebirth cycle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?
Get clear on your WHY. Be ready to live, breathe, sleep with it all day. Every day be as strong as you are graceful; sometimes, the universe has a new plan of action for you.
