Powering Purpose - Insignia Partners
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in organizational development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marisol Rodriguez, Founder of Insignia Partners, located in Boulder, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Insignia Partners helps mission-driven organizations get better at changing the world for good by holistically improving the three key drivers of their teams' performance: strategy, talent and culture, and stakeholder management. Our clients include nonprofit organizations, local, county, and state governments, and schools.
Tell us about yourself
I love people and am inspired by the synergy between strategy and highly effective leaders and teams. My clients count on my uncommon ability to help teams and groups comprised of individuals with diverse skills, styles, and perspectives come together in alignment with a shared path forward.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Making it to 10 years! I still pinch myself that I have been able to expand my partnerships and client base for 10 solid years. I am now still doing the core of what I love but getting opportunities to address all sorts of social issues like education, housing, climate, and domestic violence.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I have to find every dollar I earn. Because the large majority of my work is project-based, it is scary at times not to have consistent income. At times it feels like a feast or famine.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- It's okay to say no. Sometimes you aren't the right fit for a certain client or project. Don't think you have to take everything on, especially if the client doesn't share your values or approach.
- Find partners who build you up, help you grow, and have your back. Formally or informally, partnerships with other consultants have been my lifeline.
- Don't be afraid of loss leads. Sometimes you need to take on work that will help you expand your knowledge base, build a new skill, or gain a new reference. Be strategic by thinking through how you can grow by looking at loss leads.
