Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Rudel, founder of Insightology Business Solutions, located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We guide businesses, non-profits, and government entities to improve their performance in delivering value to clients, customers, and other stakeholders. We accomplish this by teaching and mentoring how to use process analysis, design, and improvement to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations. We don’t run improvement projects for organizations but rather transfer know-how so that it resides within the organization and can yield benefits in the future.
Tell us about yourself
My career has spanned roles from front-line business contributor to various leadership roles. Throughout, I naturally worked to improve the operations of my area and the organization as a whole. Through the early part of my career, I pursued operational improvements through intuition and problem-solving but then learned how to structure improvement activities better as I was exposed to formal approaches, building on the lessons and wisdom of those who came before me. I love helping people and sharing what I know. I am excited to help people improve the processes in their organizations by transferring the knowledge I’ve gained about both what to do and what not to do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Simply launching my business. I started with an idea but had a lot of doubt about the idea, myself, and my ability to turn that into a business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning to do things that I've never done. A business runs on a lot of moving parts, and even though I'm an intelligent person, I've never had to do things like marketing or manage an internet presence.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Validate your business idea by doing market research, and shift as needed to fit your market. The easiest and free way to do market research is to use the typeahead feature in a Google search based on how popular a search is.
- Once you are confident in your idea, believe in yourself and commit. It is easy to doubt yourself, and, as a result, you don't work on the things you need to work on.
- Market & build your presence early, long before you are ready to launch so that when you do launch, you have customers waiting for you.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Don't be afraid to fail. Many businesses launch and do not succeed for many reasons, and your business may not succeed as well. There are a lot of ways to fail, but only one way to succeed, and that is by committing fully. Never let fear of failure prevent you from committing!
