Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah E. Speers, Founder of Innergize Wellness LLC., located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Innergize Wellness, where I support women in doing the inner work to improve food/eating issues and experience empowered eating and living. I specialize in integrating several innovative energy-based coaching and self-help methods, such as the Emotional Freedom Technique and Reiki, with attachment repair, inner child healing and mindfulness, and somatic-based practices. I offer 1-1 coaching, group programs, online events, and in-person retreats that are designed to empower you with the information, tools, and experiences to reduce food cravings and emotional overeating, find relief from emotional wounds, and experience greater inner peace and self-acceptance. My customers are women ages 19-45 who struggle with food addiction, emotional overeating, and other forms of disordered eating tendencies such as binging. These women understand that there are psychological, emotional, and energetic factors influencing their relationship with food, and they are seeking support in doing the deeper inner work to address the underlying root issues.

Tell us about yourself

My motivation for this work stems from my own struggle with eating disorders in my 20s. I vowed that I was going to heal myself and then commit my life to supporting others struggling with food/eating issues so that no one would have to suffer with disordered eating tendencies the way I did. My recovery journey eventually led me to return to graduate school, where I obtained a master's in Marriage & Family Therapy at the University of San Diego. I completed my practicum training at UCSD's Center for Healthy Eating & Activity Research, where I was trained in eating disorder treatment. Upon graduation, I was hired to develop and direct an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for binge eating disorders for adults and adolescents. This spearheaded my training and career in treating binge eating. I then discovered alternative healing modalities like EFT (aka tapping) and Reiki, which I found offered additional benefits to traditional modalities. I eventually branched out and started my own coaching/healing business where I empower women to do the inner work to improve their relationship with food and eating and LOVE what I do and who I work with.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting my business at all! It's amazing how much fear and doubt can arise when considering starting a business. It truly takes a lot of courage, dedication, and commitment to trust that when you take the leap into entrepreneurship that it will be worth it, financially and spiritually. And I feel so blessed and grateful to be able to say it has been. I'm so proud of the services I offer, from online self-guided programs and groups, to retreat experiences and 1-1 support. Recently, I launched The Empowered Eating & Living Podcast- and it's always been a dream to start a podcast, so this feels like my newest biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Figuring out how I want to operate my business in a way that feels true and authentic to me. There are so many business models and definitions of success that it can be easy to fall into a comparison of how my business "should" look compared to how other's business look, and I've realized that trying to make my business be like other's businesses is a disservice to how my unique business is meant to be. I have worked diligently to trust my own inner guidance when it comes to shaping my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust that if you have a clear vision and heart desire of how you want to serve, you will be supported in bringing that vision to life.
  2. Your business gets to be an ever-growing and expanding entity. It doesn't have to be perfect right from the start, and it never will be perfect. So relax and allow yourself to have fun continuing to expand and grow your business without the pressure of how it "should" look getting in the way.
  3. Ask for help when you need it. You're not meant to build a business alone. Plus, it's more fun with the right encouragement and support.
