Re-imagine Your Role in Society - Inheritance Project
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katya Stepanov, Co-Founder of Inheritance Project, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Inheritance Project is an emerging leader in the DEIB space. We offer an innovative approach to topics of identity at work and teach actionable inclusive leadership skills through the lens of inheritance. Our work spans the public and private sectors. Our clients include Vanguard, Suffolk County Government, Heineken, Deloitte, McCann Health NY, and Signature Theatre.
Tell us about yourself
I started working on my business because when I transformed the inherited culture, beliefs, and behaviors that were negatively impacting my life and work, I became the author of my own story. What motivates me each day is that now I get to help teams and individuals break inherited generational cycles in business and life. I get to facilitate experiential inclusion and leadership workshops that actually focus on the nervous system so that it actually sticks. I get to help teams navigate hybrid and remote work cultures and create intentional connections. I get to help leaders navigate challenging times and conversations when they need to carry their companies through layoffs and recession. I get to help teach people the skills they need to have constructive conflict and reduce the time and money spent navigating conflicts at work.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is that we run a successful business without taking any investment capital. Our business is successful due to the success and impact of our programs.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is learning how to be accountable for every single mistake or issue that happens, whether or not it was directly 'your fault.' You need to learn how to constantly be radically responsible for everything that happens in your business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stop talking about it and start doing it. You will learn so much more by trying, experimenting, and failing than you will by ideating.
- Get comfortable talking about what you do with everyone in your life. The more allies you have, the higher sales and the more community you will cultivate.
- Take care of yourself because you ARE your business. If you aren't healthy and in top shape, how will your business be?
