Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with DB Bedford, Founder and CEO of iNeverWorry Consulting, located in Oakland, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a consulting and training business centered around the development of Emotional Intelligence in the workforce. My clients are leaders, CEOs, and training managers.
Tell us about yourself
My name is DB Bedford, often referred to as "The Ei Guy," and I am from Oakland, California. My journey has been challenged emotionally since I was a kid growing up in the concrete jungle of Brookfield, where you were either the lion or the gazelle. Looking back, I realized that all of my poor decisions in life were rooted in emotions and my inability to manage them accordingly.
As a result, from the age of 13 years old up until I was 23 was spent in and out of the criminal justice system for violent and drug-related activity. Once I understood the value of never letting emotions overpower my intelligence, my life took a quantum leap. I was able to get my record expunged and eventually start a career working in probation at the same facility where I was locked up over the years. The irony is that I ended up being colleagues with some of the officers that locked me up back then, and as the years went by, I became their supervisor.
Through this process, I developed an unwavering belief in Emotional Intelligence and harnessing the power of self. After 17 years, I decided to leave and start my own consulting company so that I could maintain my personal freedom and share this strategic insight across the country.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is witnessing the transformation that takes place with my clients when they experience the power of never letting emotions overpower their intelligence.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I would say that the hardest thing is wrestling with self-doubt during those times when your business isn't in flow. It's important to always remember why you started and maintain an unwavering belief in your ability to achieve any level of success that your heart desires.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take the time to gain clarity on what it is that you actually want to accomplish, focus on the goal and say no to anything that's not aligned with where you are headed.
- Develop your brand in a way that's authentic and a reflection of who you are. Make sure it's rememberable so that it's repeatable; that way, it will be referable.
- Don't get caught up worrying about who supports you and who doesn't because the hard truth is that most people you know will be slow to get on board, but when your product or services are dope, you will attract all the business that you will ever need.
