Words Worth Reading - Indigo River Publishing
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in publishing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Georgette Green, Co-Owner of Indigo River Publishing, located in Pensacola, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a co-owner of Indigo River Publishing, which is a modern, cooperative hybrid publisher. This means that we partner with authors financially to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table. Our authors receive expert-level editorial, design, and marketing support, as well as sales distribution while maintaining more creative control and IP rights. We are also distributed by Simon & Schuster.
We publish books across all genres. However, over the past few years, we have been putting a more intentional focus on the nonfiction arm of our catalog. We enjoy working with diverse authors who wish to put out content that has the potential to make a positive impact on readers.
Tell us about yourself
I received my master’s degree in mental health counseling and worked for several years in that field. When I moved to Florida in 2016, I began working with Indigo River Publishing part-time in author acquisitions. I found it enjoyable and rewarding, so over time, it grew into full-time. In 2020, my son and I took over the business.
I find it a privilege to work with so many incredible people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We share the goal with our authors to bring not only entertainment to readers but content to make a positive impact on people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think if I had to pick one thing, it would be building the team that we have. I can’t take full credit, but having the right people and culture is a game changer.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me personally, it minds the details. I tend to be a visionary, so it is challenging at times to balance the bigger picture and the details. This is one area where the diversity of personalities and perspectives within our team has made a huge difference.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Most people would say you first must find your “why.” I would agree with that. Second, do your research, ask questions, and find mentors. Third, find ways to disrupt your industry.
