Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christy Evans, founder of inBtwn Cafe, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-run local cafe with both food and art. inBtwn cafe is building back a sense of community in this area. We are the place you stop by for locally roasted coffee, homemade treats, sandwiches, soups, and chili. Our menu is definitely Canadian but inspired by many different regions of the world.

Our customers live mostly in the area and range in age groups. We get to know our customers, and many have said it's the place they go to talk about their day...sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Tell us about yourself

Having worked in food and beverage for over 30 years, from everything from fine dining to casual bars, the part I loved the most was interacting with the guests. Having been professionally trained in French culinary, cooking is definitely one of my passions. Now that I have my own cafe, I can combine both my love of cooking and interacting with people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building regular guests who appreciate good food and the atmosphere we have created.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is no time off.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to love what you do but also have to have a full understanding of it.
  2. You have to be adaptable and always be willing to try something new.
  3. You have to do your research.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Follow your dreams, believe in yourself, and don't give up.
