What's your business, and who are your customers?

In.Visible Paradigms is an anti-oppression organization that is committed to informing and transforming white community members to better integrate themselves into the anti-oppression community, work, and movement. We work with white allies and majority-white organizations.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Brenda, and I am a full-time Anti-Oppression Consultant & Facilitator. Born in Mexico City but partially raised in India, traveled the world, middle school in South Carolina, high school in Wales, and college in Massachusetts. I identify myself as a queer transnational woman of color. After Hampshire College, I experienced diverse roles in advocacy as a youth program coordinator at a refugee resettlement organization, later as a bilingual counselor for survivors and victims of intimate partner violence, and finally as a peer recovery coach. I built In.Visible Paradigms to support white allies in their connection to the work, community, and movement of anti-oppression. My goal is to go beyond the basics and facilitate transformative spaces for white allies to move forward in the journey of turning silence into language and action (Audre Lorde).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Refining purpose and finding partnerships that celebrate our work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The creation and celebration of the individual.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Creative experiments are about intention, not perfection.
  2. Reach out to people. 80% of the time, new friendships and support will form.
  3. You won't really know what you need to learn, truly, after the first year.
