Get Out Of Survival Mode - In The Cortex

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Paloma Garcia, Co-Founder of In the Cortex, located in Mexico City, Mexico, Mexico
.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In the Cortex offers a non-invasive, movement-based, self-guided online program designed to show our members how to get the brain out of survival mode and get on with their life. By re-creating the first year of life in terms of movement (that means crawling on the floor at any age), we can finish any primitive brain development that we might have missed as babies and give our brain the solid foundation it needs to operate efficiently. Our customers are people of all ages who identify with the signs of a disorganized brain, which include challenges such as consistent anxiety, trouble focusing, emotional regulation challenges, sensory processing challenges, coordination challenges, and many more.

Tell us about yourself

I got started in the world of brain reorganization, thanks to my brother. He was a kid who was pretty much on the struggle bus from day one after being born prematurely. He had challenges with school, social, motor planning, reading pretty much everything. And he was also the smartest, funniest, sweetest kid ever - it was just really hard for him to show his true self. My mom took him to every single therapy and program out there, and we never saw any lasting change until he reorganized his brain. Now he's pretty much the adults adult I know, all because he gave his brain the foundation it needed to operate efficiently. (The full story is on our website under the Reviews section.)

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment sounds super corny, so bear with me, but it's the truth. It happens all the time: it's when I get an email, text message, or Facebook post from one of our members talking about how the program has changed their life. This is why I am on a mission to spread the word that the brain can change and life can get easier at any age!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Definitely the backstage stuff. The creation of the program, talking about it, interacting with our members, and answering questions, that's the fun stuff! Dani and I would do that for free if we didn't need a roof over our heads. The hard part comes when you have to do things that are not naturally part of your calling, but that absolutely need to get done! Things like editing videos, bookkeeping, and sending out email reminders, they're not my favorite, but I end up enjoying them because they're part of what keeps the business going!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you're committed to it! The ups and downs will definitely test that.
  2. Surround yourself with great people who understand your mission, both personally and professionally. Especially if it's a business that sounds a little wacky (like crawling on the floor!)
  3. Have ALL the ideas but focus on one at a time. Dani and I have like 5 lists filled with all the ideas of things we want to accomplish, but we really started seeing true progress when we focused on one project at a time.
