Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan McCaleb, Owner of Improv Team Culture, located in Boise, ID, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Improv Team Culture (ITC) is an improv training company that helps teams and individuals transform their "Yeah, But" challenges into "Yes, And" solutions.
My clients range from highly motivated 1:1 coaching clients who are driven to be thought leaders and change agents in their respective fields and business who value a collaborative culture, innovation, and unparalleled creativity and communication skills.
ITC serves companies of all sizes, from small family-owned businesses to global fortune 500 enterprises.
Tell us about yourself
I was introduced to improv in my early 20s while I was a bank manager. What I thought was going to be a fun outlet for myself, to perform comedy on the weekends, nearly immediately transformed the way I approached my leadership role in my own office and throughout the region.
I could see the value in applying improv rules as they pertain to everyday life. They made me a more attentive human, personally and professionally.
I began working towards building my business officially in November 2010, and it's been quite the adventure to bring my vision to life - to Create Happier, Healthier Human Connections through Humor.
Now, as a single mother to four kids, I strive each day to build the life of my dreams and to spark joy and creativity in as many places as I possibly can through the powerful connectivity of play.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That I've never given up on the vision, no matter how many detours have been on the journey.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Wearing so many hats until you make the leap to pay for help from assistants or other roles. It is hard to stay motivated on certain projects when you are taken out of the flow of genius. It is SO worth it to hire out the parts of your business that are not in your wheelhouse of strengths, so you can spend more time in your zone, thus keeping your fire lit!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ask for help. Find a mentor. Invest in yourself by getting a business or life coach to continue acquiring new skills, tools, and accountability to reach valuable milestones.
- Don't give up on yourself and YOUR vision.
- Avoid comparing yourself with others or pivoting too often as you refine the strategy that works best for YOU. Your timeline will be different than everyone else's in your field, and there is enough business for us all, so the energy you put into comparison or competition will be better served as fuel for your goals and deliverable.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Have fun. Take care of yourself. As soon as you notice your feelings are not EXCITED or positive, take a moment to pause and reflect on the things that keep you in alignment.
