Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexander Chriest, Chief Content Officer, and co-founder of Impact Human Performance, located in Denver, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the co-founder of Impact Human Performance. Our mission is to help other human beings be at their best more often. In alignment with that mission, our science-based solutions will help our clients to overcome the two main barriers that prevent them from showing up at their best for the people and things that matter most. The first barrier that they will overcome is that they were likely never taught how to effectively manage and actually grow from stress. As a result, they’re getting little-to-no recovery from stress during their day, which is negatively affecting their performance and engagement and significantly increasing the likelihood of burnout.
Once we’ve effectively increased our client’s ability to manage and grow from stress, then we help them to overcome the second barrier to being at their best more often, which is the mismanagement of their energy that has likely been contributing to them feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and an overall lack of fulfillment in their life both personally and professionally.
We have the expertise and flexible solutions to optimize stress and recovery performance, and to increase overall energy capacity, whether you’re seeking solutions at the corporate or enterprise level, within a military or government environment, or simply for yourself as an individual.
Tell us about yourself
I was never the person that knew what they wanted to do when they grew up. After earning my master’s degree in exercise physiology, I worked for a company where I met my mentor Dr. Jim Loehr, a renowned Performance Psychologist. He convinced me to go back and pursue my doctorate in educational psychology with a focus on motivation, resilience, and perseverance. Lack of recovery from stress has always been an issue for individuals and organizations. The pandemic amplified that issue and prompted my partners and me to form Impact Human Performance to address the significant need for training on stress and recovery in the marketplace.
The continual evolution of our content and company motivates me every day. When we partner with organizations, we have the opportunity to create solutions that will help their workforce. At the end of the day, we are helping people, and that is what gets me out of bed every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is reading through the testimonials from our clients. Realizing that the content that I have put together is helping individuals show up as a better version of themselves for their family and friends is something that never gets old.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There really isn’t an “off switch.” I am very passionate about the work that we are doing, so it can be hard to take my own advice and recover. It is easy to wake up each day and want to continue moving forward. And I know that in order to continue to move forward, I need to be intentional about my recovery from stress every day.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
It is hard to think of just three but here goes nothing.
- One line always sticks with me, “don’t get stuck in the planning phase.” It can be easy to wait for everything to be perfect, but when it comes to starting a business, you have to take the leap. You will be surprised how far along you could be in one year.
- Get focused. When starting, it can be easy to lose sight of your mission trying to chase clients. If you are passionate about your business, the clients will come. Stick to your niche.
- Celebrate the small wins. Consistency is the most important attribute to growth. It can be easy to overlook the small victories along the way. Don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You are no different than any other successful business owner. I think that false story got in my way for a long time because I didn’t think I had what it takes to be a business owner. You must Challenge the stories in your head in order to continue to grow as a human being.
