Proactively Protecting Your Business - Iluma Law Firm

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Colynn O'Brien, founder of Iluma Law Firm, PLLC., located in Orlando, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a business and trademarks attorney for female founders. I help female founders build their wealth by making sure they have bulletproof brand protection so they can rest easy while staying within their zone of genius.

Tell us about yourself

As the oldest of 8 siblings, I've always felt like the matriarch of the family. I've always been the go-to person when my friends needed advice as well, so it only made sense that I became a lawyer. But it wasn't until I was learning about Roe v. Wade and other women's rights Supreme Court cases in high school that I decided I wanted to be a lawyer. Throughout my legal career, I've had great mentors, and I've seen what great company culture looks like. However, I also experienced toxic workplaces and burnout.

At my lowest point of burnout, I felt paralyzed, scared, and lost. The volume of work was so high, and I was constantly putting out fires, which prevented me from serving others in the way I felt I was meant to. It wasn't until I joined a community of female founders who gave me the accountability, support, and inspiration to go for it and start my own thing. I wanted to be the support system for female founders so they could continue making their impact without worrying about whether their brands were protected.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Going for it and not looking back. It took a lot of courage to leave a stable, comfortable job at a law firm to start my own thing, but I'm so glad and proud I did.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Some days, I feel like a complete imposter and wonder who gave me permission to be running my own company, but the funny thing is, the more I do this thing, the less the imposter syndrome comes out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust yourself.
  2. Hire an accountant.
  3. Don't forget about legal!
