Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Iris Mendez, Owner of ILM Healing Solutions, LLC., located in Drexel Hill, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is ILM Healing Solutions, LLC, where I offer healing solutions for the soul, including intuitive healing coaching, mindfulness coaching, reiki energy healing, and yoga. I am also a self-published author of Healing My Four Bodies An Interactive Guide to Self-Inquiry and Solutions for the Soul, and I host The IM Healing Podcast. My clients are primarily women seeking intuitive guidance and accountability towards healing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually via my SOULution-focused approach.

Tell us about yourself

I am a psychotherapist and licensed social worker by education and trade. Additionally, I have always had divine spiritual intuitive gifts, which I was not always able to bring into my work as a formal/professional counselor/therapist or mental health professional. Furthermore, I, too, have gone through my own health and healing journey. Seeing firsthand the struggles clients have gone through, in addition to experiencing them and growing through my own, I decided to pivot my business in the spiritual intuitive world to be able to support people from a more source-guided approach.

My ears were taxed from a lot of the things I heard in the field, in addition to things I had seen in the crisis/psychiatric world. I felt a strong push from my guides to serve people in this capacity. What motivates me each day is knowing that I am serving others in my most authentic way and I am seeing my client's results via the reviews I receive or witnessing their progress.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Finishing and self-publishing my first book Healing My Four Bodies: An Interactive Guide to Self-Inquiry and Solutions for the Soul. It had been an idea almost 6 years ago, and it wasn't until 2020 that I finally dusted off the manuscript and began to finalize it for self-publishing at the end of 2021. The feedback I have received in being open about my own struggles while also offering guidance and tools to others has been overwhelming in a grand way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, who also recently went back to working another gig, it can be difficult to manage time, stay disciplined, as well as creating content. I have outsourced before, but it didn't seem as authentic. As a writer, I want my audience to feel and hear me through my content in a way that resonates with them. Finding someone who meets that mark is difficult. I know I will eventually outsource more, but for now, I am okay with navigating it all alone. But I am open and ready to receive help from an assistant again, among other things.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do thorough research on your target audience as it relates to your services/products.
  2. Look into your area and the market/niche and ensure you are well-versed in how you are going to stand out from the rest. We all have our own unique thumbprint or "sauce" or "juice," so don't allow someone already doing what you want to do to deter you.
  3. Branding is super important! Hire someone to do this, which includes your logo, colors, etc. Make sure you LOVE your business name and that it is a true representation of what you offer. Think of it like naming a child (you wouldn't want to change it down the road even if your business does pivot). Take your time!
  4. Don't be afraid to "fail forward" there are lessons and blessings with each "failure," so take them and move forward. It is part of the success journey.
  5. Don't be afraid to pivot! I mean, look at Blockbuster (now I am dating myself here), had they not allowed themselves to pivot into the streaming services and opted in the Netflix approach way back when they may still be a reputable company in business. Change is constant, so don't be afraid to make some changes/transitions in your business approaches.
  6. Don't take negative feedback personally! Learn and grow!
