Turn Your Revolutionary Ideas Into Reality - Ian Saul

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ian Saul, CEO of Naked Coffee Group, located in Bournemouth, Dorset, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have many businesses ranging from a coffee shop chain and a school right through to a tech company. Due to the varied businesses, my target audience ranges from 14-50 and ranges from coffee lovers and language students to retail/hospitality businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I left the construction industry looking for something recession-proof and found Coffee; from there, I built my businesses around the serviceable needs of a coffee shop. For example, we needed roasted coffee, so I became a roaster and supplied my stores; we needed reliable till systems, so we created a tech company and built our own tills. I buzz on life and so wake up every day happy, smash the gym, and hit work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Coming from the British Mullbery clothing, family expectations are high. I do not believe achievement in business should be based on financial reward. I am converting an 8-story office block at the moment to turn into an education center for sustainability. I think being able to give something back is so important for the sole and inner well-being. I think this will be my mark on what I have achieved.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Life balance! You need to make sure you don't get consumed with work, which is hard because you give everything you do your all. This is the key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always reinvest back into the business; it is so important to help growth.
  2. Surround yourself with positive, inspiring people, being inspired is so important and gives self motivation.
  3. Do your homework. Many people start businesses without working out inventory, business rates, bills, wages, etc. You won't last long if you don't do your homework.
